Can Mariah Carey Bounce Back from Last New Year’s Eve Mishap?

It happens to the best of us: one moment you’re jetting into New York from Aspen to perform at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, and the next you’re fumbling with your inner-ear mic and looking generally peeved in front of millions of people. This is the Mariah Carey New Year’s Eve 2017 story—and part two will either be a redemptive arc or a redux of part one. She’s scheduled to perform again for New Year’s Eve 2018.

Last year, headlines exploded after Carey was unable to sing her song “Emotions,” and a subsequent back-and-forth blame game ensued. The malfunctions, mixed with Carey’s extra diva humor, made for great television, and her manager at the time, Stella Bulochnikov, even accused Dick Clark Productions of sabotaging the singer on purpose, in hopes of getting a “viral moment.” The production company retaliated by calling the accusation “absurd,” and instead placed the blame on Carey, who sent a stand-in for the sound check in her stead.

All of it was very on brand; as much as Mariah Carey is the Queen of Christmas, she’s the patron saint of New Year’s Eve, too. The holiday is always a little messy, never quite goes the way you’d like it to, and takes a long while to recover from.

This year should be slightly different, though. Mariah will be sure to make the sound check herself, for one, per TMZ. Both parties have a vested interest in the singer’s success, particularly after last year’s debacle. The stakes are high, and there will likely be extra eyeballs on the screen waiting to see if Carey falters again. As Ryan Seacrest diplomatically said on Good Morning America Friday, “New year [is] about new beginnings. She’s a legendary, iconic artist—so we’re excited to have her back to do it again.”
