Jaggery production picks up as Pongal festival nears

No chemical is mixed during production, say manufacturers

With Pongal festival just three weeks away, jaggery production in the district has picked up as producers expect better price in the coming days.

Over 250 small units making jaggery are located in Mullamparappu and Ammapet area and hundreds of workers are involved in it for generations.

Traders meet at Chithode and decide the market price and later place orders with the producers on every Saturdays. For Pongal and Deepavali, orders are placed well in advance. Jaggery made here is marketed in Kovilpatti, Sathur and in Kerala.

Due to severe drought conditions this year, sugarcane production dropped significantly and hence jaggery production also fell.

“However, we brought sugarcane from Mysuru in lorries. But it was not affordable and hence we dropped the plan,” said K. Rajamaniyan (65) who is producing jaggery for the past 40 years in Mullamparappu.

He said that by crushing one tone of sugarcane and after processing, they got 85 kg of jaggery. The market was good and they sold it for ₹ 45 to ₹ 50 a kg, he added.

Unit owners say that no chemical is mixed during the production stage and they sell the products in its natural colour.
