FOREST DEPT REVIVES ‘GAINFUL’ AGRO-FORESTRY

Farmers now allowed to grow and sell certain varieties of trees without permission; officials hope for green cover boost

The forest department has come up with a profitable proposition for state's farmers — grow, cut and sell variety of trees in market without permissions. The officials have permitted the farmers to sell forest trees under agro-forestry (agri-silviculture) including teak, bamboo, sandal, amla, tamarind and so on.

The state forest ministry on Tuesday approved the scheme which would not only bring barren land under cultivation, but will also increase the receding green cover. They have also said that agro-forestry will bolster income opportunity for farmers, enhance wood supply from non-forest areas to meet the increasing demand of industries, construction activities and other domestic requirements.
