According to media reports, the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) in Aligarh has sent letters to various schools with Hindu student majority asking them not to celebrate Christmas.
According to HJM, letters have been sent to all schools in the city asking them not to organise Christmas celebrations on their campuses. Not only HJM, many other Hindu groups are opposing Western culture and lifestyle. For example, Valentine Day and dresses like T-shirts, skirts and jeans are also opposed.
However, the schools and teachers are of the view that they had been celebrating the religious festivals of Diwali, Holi, Eid and Christmas to promote religious harmony and stress the commonality of values in various religions.
There is also news from Satna in Madhya Pradesh regarding a mob attacking a carol singing group and priests when they went to a village for an event related to Christmas.
India is a secular nation that houses many religious communities. Christians are a religious minority in the country and three states of India have a Christian majority population. However, Christmas is the biggest and a popular festival among school children.
Currently, markets are decked up for the occasion with shops packed with Christmas trees, presents, ornaments, items of decoration and "Merry Christmas" cards.
Nativity plays and scenes are staged in many schools and churches on Christmas morning along with singing of hymns and carols. Also, some celebrants dressed as Santa go around distributing sweets, candies, toffees and gifts to kids.
