DePaul, Chicago police issue alerts after 6 students mugged within minutes

DePaul University and Chicago police sent out safety alerts after six students were mugged within minutes early Thursday on or near the North Side campus and another victim was robbed on the Near West Side, apparently by the same robbers.

Four or five young men committed at least three robberies on or near the DePaul campus and another not long after on the Near West Side between about midnight and 12:40 a.m., according to police. The group used a white Audi SUV to get around, took out handguns and robbed the victims at gunpoint, according to a Chicago police alert.

One of the students reported that he was walking on Sheffield Avenue on campus, south of Fullerton Avenue, around 12:25 a.m. when a white Audi approached and two people jumped out and demanded his belongings, according to the alerts. The robbers got back in the car and fled north.

About five minutes earlier, another student reported a similar robbery near Racine and Clybourn avenues, in the 1600 block of West Armitage Avenue. In that robbery, "a weapon was displayed," the school said.

Four other students reported being robbed at gunpoint about 12:30 a.m. near Sheffield and Altgeld Street, about a block north of campus.

A fourth robbery took place about 12:40 a.m. in the 900 block of South Western Avenue, according to Chicago police.

No injuries were reported in any of the robberies.

The robbers were described as four or five black men, ages 18 to 22. One was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt, another was wearing a burgundy hooded sweatshirt. All of those who got out of the SUV wore surgical masks and had handguns, according to Chicago police.
