'Thalapathy’ Vijay Vijay first film of the year Bairavaa failed to create any impact. It just managed to achieve the ‘average’ status in the Tamil Nadu trade. But what really made Thalapathy the number one star of 2017 is Mersal, which grossed more than 250cr worldwide. Though people say the political controversy helped the film to a large extent, no one can deny the constantly growing superstardom of Vijay in Tamil cinema.
What he did: Bairavaa and Mersal were his releases. Mersal turned out to be a landmark film for the actor grossing more than 250cr.
Future projects: Untitled magnum opus with his hit director AR Murugadoss with whom the actor delivered two blockbusters — Thuppakki and Kaththi.
Sify tip: Don’t give chance to directors who can’t utilize your full potential. Expectations are sky-rocketing for your next with Murugadoss, let the success streak continue...
Thala Ajith Unlike Vijay, Thala Ajith had only one release Vivegam in 2017. Vivegam received poor reviews from the critics and exorbitant budget only made it as a loss venture for the buyers. But Ajith’s biggest strength is his loyal fan base, hope their ‘Viswasam’ and a good script from director Siva will help the actor deliver a hit with his upcoming film Viswasam.
What he did: A spy thriller Vivegam that did not live upto the huge expectations and turned out to be a disaster at the box office.
Future projects: Ajith’s fourth project with director Siva is titled Viswasam. Sources say that it will be a mass masala entertainer like their previous outings Veeram and Vedalam.
Sify tip: Come out of your comfort zone, try teaming up with talented young commercial filmmakers who are waiting to showcase you in a new manner.
Suriya Suriya is at the third position, inspite of Si3 which misfired. All eyes are on the actor’s next release Thaannaa Serndha Koottam.
What he did: After 24, Suriya went back to his successful cop franchise Singam with Hari but the film was a failure.
Future projects: Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is ready for Pongal release; he will also soon start shooting for Selvaraghavan’s thriller.
Sify tip: Suriya should select good scripts that connect with audiences. Should strictly avoid mass films.
Sivakarthikeyan Sivakarthikeyan is at No:4. The actor’s hard work and planning made him one of the bankable stars in Tamil cinema. Siva’s stardom is on the rise and his Velaikkaran’s day one opening is still a dream for decade-old actors in Kollywood.
What he did: Velaikkaran is getting decent to good reviews in the media and the opening is massive.
Future projects: An untitled rural mass entertainer with Rajini Murugan director Ponram, a sci-fi film with Indru Netru Naalai director Ravikumar and Vignesh ShivN-Studio Green film.
Sify tip: Nothing much, keep up the good work and focus on your strengths
Vijay Sethupathi Thanks to two hits and one blockbuster, Vijay Sethupathi has entered the top 5 list. Makkal Selvan’s Kavan and Karuppan were hits at the box office whereas the blockbuster Vikram Vedha took the actor to a different level.
What he did: Except the long-delayed Puriyatha Puthir, rest of his three films Kavan, Karuppan and Vikram Vedha are profitable ventures.
Future projects: Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren, Junga, 96, Seethakathi and Super Deluxe.
Sify tip: Though your strategy of doing multiple films is working out big time, how about slowing down a bit and give us more Vikram Vedhas in future?
